Parathyroid

It is part of the endocrine system.

Four dots behind thyroid

Made up of parafollicular cells or C-cells.

These release calcitonin - decreases blood calcium levels.

Two types of cell:

Chief or Principal cells

Oxyphil cells

Principal cells release parathyroid hormone (PTH) also called parathormone.

This hormone regulates Calcium, Magnesium and phosphate levels.

Stimulates osteoclasts.

Oxyphil cells - not know what they do.
