Part of the brain stem

 

Brain stem is composed of three parts:

Medulla oblongata

Pons

Midbrain

 

The medulla contains superior part of spinal cord.

It is about 3cm long.

It is composed of white and grey matter.

 

The grey matter are the nuclei

- cardiovascular

- rhythmicity

- vomiting

- coughing

- swallowing

- hiccuping

- sneezing

 

Nuclei for five pairs of cranial nerves:

- vestibulocochlear

- glossopharyngeal

- vagus

- accessory

- hypoglossal

 

Posterior part

- touch

- conscious proprioception

- vibration

 

Synapses of ascending sensory axons. Post synaptic neurons relay info to the thalamus.
